Backup IMAP email

You can create a copy of your IMAP emails and save them in your system’s local folder. The backup procedure for all email clients is almost the same and easy to perform. To know how to backup IMAP message from your email client servers, read and proceed with the guided instructions given below.


Archiving the IMAP email will free up space on your email client or webmail. Some Email Service Providers(ESPs) have limitations for storing the data.

  • Step 1:Launch the Outlook application on your system.
  • Step 2:Click File Open & Export Import/ Export.
  • Step 3:Now the Import and Export Wizard will open.
  • Step 4:Select the Export to a file option from the Choose an action to perform section and click the Next button.
  • Step 5:Now, you will be prompted to select a file type.
  • Step 6:Select Outlook Data File (.pst) Next.
  • Step 7:Select the IMAP folder you want to back up. Since our objective is to back up the emails, select Inbox Next.
  • Step 8:Specify the location to save the emails. You can click the Browse button and search for your local folder or select a location from the drop-down menu.
  • Step 9:Click the Radio button beside the Replace duplicates with items exported option. Finally, click Finish. 

Backup IMAP Email Mac

First, locate the mail backup location on your Mac OS. After that, you can make a copy of the mail and save it to the secure location. To know how to find the mail backup location on your Mac system, follow the instructions given below.

  • Step 1:Click the Go option. Now the Go window will open.
  • Step 2:Press the Command + Shift + G keys at the same time.
  • Step 3:In the text field, type the ~/Library/Mail/V3 command.
  • Step 4:Tap the Enter button on your Mac system keypad.
  • Step 5:Now, the Apple mail message folder will be displayed on the screen.
  • Step 6:Locate the sub-folder named IMAP, right-click on it, and select the Move to option.
  • Step 7:Select the folder or location in which you wish to save the IMAP messages.
  • Step 8:Now, the IMAP message folders will be moved to the specified location on your Mac system.

Backup IMAP email In Thunderbird

  • Step 1:You can take a copy of your Thunderbird IMAP email easily. The Thunderbird email client is a software that can be installed on your computer.
  • Step 2:You can download the emails from the Thunderbird server and save them to your system’s local folder.
  • Step 3:To know how to back up IMAP emails from Thunderbird, perform the quick steps given below.
  • Step 4:First, create a folder on your system’s Local Folders section.
  • Step 5:Launch the Thunderbird application on your system.
  • Step 6:On the left-hand side of the system screen, you can find the new folder you have created in the Local Folders section.
  • Step 7:You can also create the new folder in the Thunderbird mail window.
  • Step 8:Navigate to the Local Folders tab and right-click on it.
  • Step 9:Select the New Folder option. Now the New Folder pop-up dialog box will appear on the screen.
  • Step 10:Enter a name in the given field and click the Create Folder button.
  • Step 11:Now, you can find the new folder on the left side of the screen.
  • Step 12:Click the Inbox tab, select the IMAP email messages you wish to backup, and right-click on it.
  • Step 13:Click the Move to or Copy to option and select Local Folder followed by the folder you have created.
  • Step 14:Now, all the selected IMAP email messages are moved to your system’s Local folder.
