Guide: Configure Google Mail SMTP Server

You can Configure Google Mail SMTP Server on your Android phone, iPhone, and computer using the SMTP server.

The Google mail account server details are listed below for your reference.

Guide: Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.gmail.com

  • Step 1: Incoming Mail Server - pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com
  • Step 2: Password - Google mail account password
  • Step 3: Username - yourname@gmail.com
  • Step 4: Authentication required - yes
  • Step 5: Port for SMTP - 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
  • Step 6: Port for IMAP - 993
  • Step 7: Port for POP3 - 995

Enable POP or IMAP:

Before configure Google Mail SMTP Server, enable either the POP or IMAP feature as per the instructions given here.

  • Step 1: Go to your computer and access the Google mail account by providing your email address and password on the default web browser.
  • Step 2: Once you click the gear icon at the top-right corner, choose the Settings option.
  • Step 3: The Settings web page will appear on the screen.
  • Step 4: After you click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, navigate to the POP Download or the IMAP Access section.
  • Step 5: To use the POP protocol, select the radio button next to the Enable POP for all mail option.
  • Step 6: If you need to use the IMAP protocol for the incoming mail server, select the radio button beside the Enable IMAP option.
  • Step 7: Finally, save the server settings by clicking the Save Changes button at the bottom.

Android:

  • Step 1: On the homescreen of your Android mobile phone, find the Gmail application and tap its icon.
  • Step 2: This will open the Gmail application on the Android mobile phone.
  • Step 3: Tap the Menu icon at the top-left corner and select the down arrow button.
  • Step 4: Tap the Add Account option to open the Set Up Email screen.
  • Step 5: Select the Other option, type the email address of the Google mail in the Enter your email address field, and tap the Next option.
  • Step 6: Choose either the Personal (POP3) or Personal (IMAP) option.
  • Step 7: After you type the password of the Google mail, tap the Next option.
  • Step 8: If you choose the IMAP protocol, type imap.gmail.com in the Server field.

  • Step 10: Make sure to type smtp.gmail.com in the SMTP Server field.
  • Step 11: After tapping the Next option, select the checkbox next to the following options and tap Next again.
  • Step 12: Notify me when emails arrive
  • Step 13: Sync emails from this account
  • Step 14: Automatically download attachments when connected to WiFi
  • Step 15: When you see the ‘Your account is set up and emails are on their way’ message on the screen, tap the Next option.
  • Step 16: Now, you can access the Google mail account from the Android mobile phone.

iPhone:

  • Step 1: Launch the Settings application on your iPhone.
  • Step 2: Tap the following options.
  • Step 3: Passwords & Accounts
  • Step 4: Add Account
  • Step 5: Other
  • Step 6: Add Mail Account
  • Step 7: Provide the correct details in the Username, Password, and Email Address fields and touch the Next option.
  • Step 8: You can choose the POP or IMAP incoming mail server.
  • Step 9: If you select the POP option, fill the User Name and Password fields and enter pop.gmail.com in the Host Name field.
  • Step 10: Go to the Outgoing Mail Server section and fill the Host Name, User Name, and Password fields.

  • Step 12: After tapping the Save option, choose the Google mail account that you have added now.
  • Step 13: Scroll down the page and select the smtp.gmail.com option.
  • Step 14: Ensure that you have turned on the toggle switch next to the Use SSL option.
  • Step 15: Navigate to the Server Port field, delete the existing number, and type 465.
  • Step 16: Finally, tap the Done option to finish the Google mail account configuration on the iPhone.

Computer: Microsoft Outlook

  • Step 1: Go to the main interface of the Microsoft Outlook 2013 application.
  • Step 2: Click File -> Account Settings -> New -> Email Account -> Next -> Manual Setup or Additional Server Type -> Next.
  • Step 3: Choose the POP or IMAP option and click the Next button.
  • Step 4: Fill all the following fields with the correct information.
  • Step 5: Your Name
  • Step 6: Email Address
  • Step 7: Account Type
  • Step 8: Incoming Mail Server
  • Step 9: Outgoing Mail Server
  • Step 10: User Name
  • Step 11: Password
  • Step 12: Click the More Settings button for the advanced server settings.
  • Step 13: Both the options given below must be selected.
  • Step 14: My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Step 15: Use Same Settings as my Incoming Mail Server
  • Step 16: Also, navigate to the Advanced tab and fill the Incoming Server and Outgoing Server (SMTP) fields.
  • Step 17: Exit the Internet Email Settings dialog box by clicking the OK button.
  • Step 18: Click the Next and wait until the email configuration test completes.
  • Step 19: Once done with the Google mail set up on the Microsoft Outlook 2013 email client, click the Finish button.

Thunderbird:

  • Step 1: At first, you have to launch the main window of the Thunderbird email client.
  • Step 2: Enter your email address, name, password, and click the Continue button.
  • Step 3: Select the radio button next to IMAP or POP3 option and click the Manual Config button.
  • Step 4: After entering the correct details in the required fields, click the Create Account button.
