Gmail SMTP Settings - Complete Steps

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is a standard protocol for sending emails across the Internet. SMTP is a part of the application layer of the TCP/IP protocol using which it stores and forwards emails across networks. Gmail SMTP settings include the following:

  • Step 1: Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Step 2: Required SSL: Yes
  • Step 3: Required TLS: Yes
  • Step 4: Authentication: Yes
  • Step 5: Secure Port for SSL: 465
  • Step 6: Secure Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

Before starting Gmail SMTP settings, ensure that you have enabled the IMAP or POP Access setting in the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section of your Gmail account.

  • Step 1: Make sure you enable the Allow less secure apps button from your Gmail Security.
  • Step 2: Next, launch Outlook 2016 on your computer and click the File menu available at the top-left corner. 
  • Step 3: Select the Info option from the left-side panel and click the Add Account button underneath Account Information.
  • Step 4: Select the option Manual setup or additional server types.
  • Step 5: Choose the POP or IMAP option and click Next.
  • Step 6: In the pop-up window, enter your account details such as email address and password.
  • Step 7: Choose either IMAP or POP as your account type from the drop-down menu in the Server Information section.
  • Step 8: Enter ‘imap.gmail.com’ in the Incoming mail server field if you have selected IMAP as your account type.
  • Step 9: Otherwise, enter ‘pop.gmail.com’ as the incoming mail server name.
  • Step 10: Enter ‘smtp.gmail.com’ in the Outgoing mail server field and fill the necessary account details on Gmail SMTP settings.
  • Step 11: Click on the More Settings button to open the Internet Email Settings window.
  • Step 12: Click the Outgoing Server tab and select the My outgoing server requires authentication checkbox.
  • Step 13: Also, select the Use the same settings as your incoming mail server option.
  • Step 14: Go to the Advanced tab and enter 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP) for the Incoming server port.
  • Step 15: Choose SSL from both the drop-down menus.
  • Step 16: Enter 465 or 587 for the Outgoing server settings port.
  • Step 17: Click OK to return to the previous screen.
  • Step 18: Finally, click theTest Account Settings button to verify the configured server settings for your Gmail account.
  • Step 19: Once the verification has been completed, click Next and select Finish.
  • Step 20: You can now access your Gmail account quickly from Outlook 2016.
