Step 1: Download Protonmail Bridge App 

  • Step 1:Open the default browser on your computer.
  • Step 2:Open the ProtonMail page to download the ProtonMail Bridge app.
  • Step 3:Scroll down the page and click the Download button for the Bridge for Windows option.

Step 2: Get The Imap And Smtp Information

  • Step 1:Open the ProtonMail Bridge app.
  • Step 2:Click the Add Account button present at the bottom.
  • Step 3:In the Log in to your ProtonMail account section, enter your ProtonMail username and password in the respective fields.
  • Step 4:Click the Next button.
  • Step 5:Once you log in to ProtonMail, you will see the connected status.
  • Step 6:Click your account name and click the Mailbox configuration option.
  • Step 7:The Bridge app will show the IMAP and SMTP information in a pop-up window.
  • Step 8:The information pop-up window will consist of Hostname, Port, Username, Password, and Security information.

Step 3: Configure The Information In A Third Party Email Client

The steps are for Outlook 2016.

  • Step 1:Open your Outlook 2016 application on your computer.
  • Step 2:Click the File menu.
  • Step 3:Click the Add Account button.
  • Step 4:Enter the ProtonMail email address in the Email address field.
  • Step 5:Click the checkbox for Let me set up my account manually option.
  • Step 6:Click Connect.
  • Step 7:Select IMAP in the pop-up window.
  • Step 8:In the Incoming Mail Server field, enter the Hostname from the ProtonMail pop-up window.
  • Step 9:Fill in the remaining information by looking at the ProtonMail Bridge pop-up window and click the Next button.
  • Step 10:In the next window, enter the password as shown in the ProtonMail Bridge pop-up window.
  • Step 11:Click Connect.
  • Step 12:Your ProtonMail account will be configured in Outlook 2016.

Step 4: Send Mail In Protonmail

  • Step 1:Log in to your ProtonMail account.
  • Step 2:Click the Compose button.
  • Step 3:Enter a recipient email address (ProtonMail user).
  • Step 4:Compose a message in the open field.
  • Step 5:In the From field, you will find a Lock icon. It indicates end-to-end encryption.
  • Step 6:Click the Send button.

Send An Email To A Non-protonmail User

When it comes to a non-ProtonMail user, there is a feature called PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) that enables end-to-end encryption of the emails you send.

  • Step 1:Click the Compose button.
  • Step 2:Enter a recipient's email address.
  • Step 3:Compose a message in the field.
  • Step 4:At the bottom, click the Encryption (Lock) icon.
  • Step 5:Enter a password in the Message Password field.
  • Step 6:Enter the password again in the Confirm Password field.
  • Step 7:Enter a password hint and click SET.
  • Step 8:Click Send.
  • Step 9:Once the email is sent, the recipient should unlock the email using the password hint.
